South Scotland MSP, Craig Hoy, recently delivered a framed copy of a motion to the newly formed Border Girls rugby team at a training session in Galashiels.
The motion congratulates the new team on its formation and thanks broadband provider GoFibre for its sponsorship support for the team.
Craig met with Ben Campbell, Director and Club Founder of Borders Girls’ Rugby Team and spoke with some of the team while visiting.
He welcomed the formation of the new girls team, which will allow a number of local clubs to participate in female rugby fixtures and league matches as full 15-strong squads.
Speaking after the visit Craig said, “It was a privilege to meet Ben and the team, they were very welcoming, and I am sure the team will be very successful. The team is an amalgamation of girls from across the borders and gives them a chance to play and practice in full 15 a side rather than in smaller teams.
“It is so important to encourage everyone to keep active, teams like the Borders girls’ team will go a long way to continuing development and making sure sport is accessible and fun for everyone. I have no doubt the team will be very successful, and I wish them all the very best.”
The motion presented to the team reads, “That the Parliament commends Scottish broadband provider GoFibre for its sponsorship of a brand new rugby team for girls living in the Scottish Borders and north Northumberland; understands that the club will connect girls in the under-16 and under-18 age grades who already play for Gala RFC, Kelso RFC and Berwick RFC; believes that rugby is growing in popularity amongst girls in Scotland, and wishes the team well in the future.”
Craig is keen to work with sporting teams and welcomes the support from businesses, such as GoFibre for continuing to support initiatives like the Border Girls team.
