CRAIG Hoy, a Conservative MSP for South Scotland, has praised the “tremendous work” of North Berwick’s ‘Harbour Helpers’ after a recent visit to the town’s harbour.
Mr Hoy was joined by Jane McMinn, the Chair of North Berwick Harbour Trust, and Andrew Duns, Secretary of the Harbour Trust. North Berwick Harbour was built as a ferry port in the 12th Century and used by pilgrims travelling to St Andrews via Earlsferry near Elie, Fife.
Today it has become a hub for community events and water sports, housing East Lothian Yacht Club as well as touring boats around Bass Rock and several fishing boats.
During his visit, Mr Hoy learned of decay on the outer wall of the harbour which has been made worse by harsh weather conditions.
The South Scotland MSP said: “It was good to visit North Berwick Harbour and learn from representatives of the Harbour Trust to about some of the exciting plans the Trust has to improve the harbour area. The Harbour Trust has been supported by tremendous work of ‘Harbour Helper’ volunteers who have helped to maintain the harbour area.
“As a key part of our local heritage, it is right that East Lothian Council supports the Harbour Trust in conserving the Harbour and supports the necessary restorative work needed to keep the harbour area in good shape for years to come.”
Jane McMinn from North Berwick Harbour Trust said: “It was good to meet Craig and update him on our necessary next project to replace a harbour wall, and update him on the necessity and completion of two other wall projects that accentuates the commitment of the volunteers of the Harbour Trust. We very much appreciate the Harbour Helpers and other groups and businesses who invest their time in the helping us conserve this fantastic community asset.”
