CRAIG Hoy, a Conservative MSP for South Scotland, has encouraged East Lothian politicians to do more in the fight against climate change as the county has been named mainland Scotland’s second largest polluter of carbon emissions.
Mr Hoy has pointed to the election manifestos of local political parties who have committed to adopting net-zero carbon emissions in East Lothian as soon as possible.
10.5 tonnes of carbon emissions are produced per person in East Lothian, which is more than double the amount produced elsewhere in Scotland.
Mr Hoy said: “Local politicians have repeated soundbites of making East Lothian a ‘net zero county’. They should now put their money where their mouths are by acting on the climate crisis here.
“We need to look at methods of encouraging active transport and building reliable public transport infrastructure across the county, which will encourage more people to travel by train and bus and help to reduce carbon emissions.
“I also think it’s important we support rural sectors in decarbonising and continue to support carbon-zero forms of energy, including Torness Power Station in Dunbar.”
