CRAIG Hoy, a Conservative MSP for South Scotland, has raised concerns the loss of a childminding development officer for Scottish Borders Council.
The childminding development officer was contracted to Scottish Borders Council through the Scottish Childminding Association, however childminders in the Borders have been advised that the post will not be renewed.
From 31 July, specialist childminding advice will no longer be offered by Scottish Borders Council, however general advice will be supplied by the early years team.
Craig Hoy MSP said: “It is very disappointing that the childminding development officer post will be lost. This will leave childminders in the Scottish Borders with less support compared to what they have been offered in the past and impact on childcare services offered across the Scottish Borders.
“The Scottish Government must urgently look to better fund Scottish Borders Council so that they can deliver this vital service.”
During General Questions in the Scottish Parliament, the South Scotland MSP asked: “Is the loss of funding for the SCMA childminding support officer in the Scottish Borders not only deeply regrettable, but isn’t it also an example of SNP council cuts. Will the Minister therefore now agree to look again at the support they give to councils to discharge their 1140 hours plan both through childminding and then nursery provision?”
Mr Hoy is also organising a meeting with the Director of Education at Scottish Borders Council to discuss the matter further.
