Local MSP Craig Hoy has been appointed as the Shadow Scottish Minister for Mental Health and Social Care.
The new South of Scotland Conservative MSP takes up the health portfolio at a critical time as the NHS emerges from the Covid pandemic and the Scottish Government prepares plans for the creation of a National Care Service.
Haddington resident Mr Hoy will join the Shadow Health ministerial team led by Shadow Cabinet Secretary Annie Wells MSP at Holyrood.
Commenting, Mr Hoy said: “I am looking forward to getting into my new role of Shadow Minister for Mental Health and Social Care with a fantastic Scottish Conservative health team led by Annie Wells.
“I am keen to hear a wide range of East Lothian community and care sector representatives as the Scottish Government moves towards the creation of a National Care Service. And, as we emerge from Covid-19, we have to work together to tackle the mental health crisis facing local communities and the NHS.”
Mr Hoy has already met with local groups in East Lothian, visiting Our Community Kitchen in Haddington on Monday where he discussed the mental health and social isolation agenda with founder Elaine Gale.
He has also planned a visit to Leuchie House, which provides short breaks with expert care for people with MS and other long term conditions.
